Winter Cities Shake-Up Overview

What is the Winter Cities Shake-Up?

Winter Cities Shake-Up is a conference for people who live in winter cities and want to improve their community's quality of life year-round, but especially in the winter.

For three days in winter, international experts in many areas, as well as artists, comedians and civic leaders, will gather in Edmonton, Canada to present findings and share experiences in one of three areas:

  • Winter Fun - there are lots of outdoor activities that can bring in all types of people - even those who think they'd rather hibernate in winter. Find out how to program inviting, accessible activities and try some of them out yourself.
  • Winter Design - explore how we can plan and design our cities so that streets and public places are warmer, more fun and easier to get around in during winter months.
  • Winter Business - from companies that are finding great economic value in locating to a winter city, to how people are marketing the cold season as one of their community's greatest assets, discover how winter economies can hold great untapped potential for urban centres.

Why Should You Attend the Winter Cities Shake-Up?

This isn't your "usual conference"...

The Shake-Up is three days of action, information, and fun. How about a field trip to a ski hill, cycling through downtown at night to an observatory to watch the stars as your warm up with hot chocolate, or going behind the scenes at an internationally-renowned winter festival that's days away from opening? Or you might want to join us every morning at 6 a.m. with the founders of the November Project for an outdoor winter workout in Edmonton's stunning North Saskatchewan River valley (it's a big valley - that means hills with lots of quad-busting stairs...).

Along with these hands-on field trips and on-site discussions, the Shake-Up will offer plenary sessions on a variety of topics, small presentations and discussion groups. Delegates will spend a magical evening at their own private winter festival - The Flying Canoe. Local artists and performers will be at the conference during the day, and there are pre- and post-conference trips that can be organized to Alberta's glorious Rocky Mountains.

The Shake-Up is looking for people to share cool ideas

Submit a presentation!  If your presentation is selected to be part of the conference, you will receive a complimentary registration to the conference. Please submit your presentation at http://www.wintercitiesconference.com/call-for-presentations-field-trips/

Behind the Winter Cities Shake-Up

Why is the City of Edmonton hosting the Winter Cities Shake-Up?

This international conference is taking place as a result of Edmonton's WinterCity Strategy. This award-winning strategy is about creating a city that's inviting, vibrant and exciting for residents and tourists throughout the winter months. It was created through extensive community consultation and focused on four pillars: Winter Business, Winter Design, Winter Life and Winter Story. The desire for an international meeting came out of this strategy as a way to bring together a network of Winter Cities and to provide a venue for learning from one another.
